Nature’s Book

Nature’s Book

_By Vanaja Tatineni_

Around me, stars are radiating light in the form of letters.

The thoughts that arise in my mind are spreading the fragrance of wild flowers.

A shy, polite page, blushing, peeks out from behind the clouds like the moon.

My little heart merrily plays in the showers of word-rain, jumping and dancing.

After the rain clears, all the colors of the rainbow have become book-butterflies and are playing in the garden.

A mischievous butterfly landed on my face.

Time, for some reason, came to a standstill.

If we become one with it, isn’t nature a vast library of books?

A Different Kind of Attraction

A Different Kind of Attraction

The thorny tree, the fruit tree, the flowering tree —

All display only their outer natures.

But deep inside the earth,

Their roots are all tangled and intertwined.

They say a woman is like a creeper,

And a man is her support. But...

The creeper does not let the tree it clings to grow.

And the tree does not let the creeper beneath it grow.

Mutual enemies.

Like husband and wife,

Both waiting, watching,

To gain the upper hand over the other.

A Promise

A Promise

I did not come to mourn what was destroyed

Nor to examine how it was destroyed

I came with the knowing that signs of

your ancient soul still wander here.

That you live on

In these surroundings, in this nature,

in those sunrises, in that wind, in those flowers,

In the books that lie unopened and weeping,

In the poetry churned by the heart,

In the earth that rains down and exhales its fragrance...

In the whispers of some silent, colored paintings.

A door left half-open

A heart shared only halfway

Words that stopped mid-sentence

The honor killing that uprooted by the roots

The hope that they would ever be complete.

You, who look at my reflection

Shattered and weeping in the mirror of the world,

Pitying me, laughing in mockery.

After a war is fought within,

There is no need to wage war outside.

Except to raise the flag of peace.

I, who carry secret sorrows unknown to the world,

Came searching for your soul

And I will keep coming,

with a love that cannot be destroyed

You gave only your heart

I left behind my entire life.

The Shirt of Joy

 The  Shirt of Joy

The boy who received

The flute his father brought home

Lay beside his mother, waiting

For dawn to break, impatient

At daybreak he climbed the hill, swift

And waited for his friend

Till then, the young breeze that roamed with the moon

Was waiting too

To drink the sunrise and warm itself a little.

The sun, lifting its tresses of light,

Rose slowly

From behind the hills...

The boy and the young breeze

Both saw their friend

"Look! The gift my father brought,"

He said, and blew his eager breath into the flute

The young breeze joined him.

With the sweet notes the flute poured out,

Nature swayed in ecstasy.

From then on, the boy appeared

Wearing his shirt of joy

Every day, for his mother and father.

Original poem in Telugu “SantOshapu Cokkaa” by Vanaja Tatineni

The Sun's Love

The Sun's Love

The Sun's Love

How much ego do you have...

That you compare my rejection

To a fallen leaf?

Do you even know the love of the sun

That wraps the flower completely

With the wings of its rays?

Ego is not a declaration

Learn to surrender yourself

And love will kneel before you.

Burdens

 Burdens

Yesterday, I lifted many burdens, carried them with pain.

I sat alone for a while and thought.

Like washing my feet before sleeping,

I threw all the burdens I had lifted into the dirt pit.

I found rest in a sleep of dreams.

I kissed my mother on her cheek...

And even threw a tantrum, asking for what I wanted!

And what did Amma say?

“Don’t lift too many burdens, don’t run too fast…

Your strength shouldn’t wear thin, you shouldn’t fall down…

I am here, aren’t I!

I will lift your burden.

I will finish your run for you.

Stay safe… my child!” she said, pampering me with love.

In my mother, I saw a thousand Yashodas.

But I…

I must discover the ease

with which Krishna lifted the Govardhana Hill on his little finger…

the ease with which I can carry burdens.

So that my mother doesn’t have to struggle.

Love is as heavy as it is effortless.

Wouldn’t you agree!?
