The Echo

The Echo

It is you who echoes within me

I am but an emptiness

When in love, I wrote of love

When in hatred, I still wrote of love

For I knew nothing else

My poetry, seeking refuge in you

Climbs one step at a time

You are the echo in me, I am the void

A Petition (Arji)* - Vanaja Tatineni

I have trapped butterflies in my bag,

It feels so heavy.

If I try to open and release them somewhere,

Not a single flower garden appears.

Just as I hid the butterflies,

I am also carrying around a bouquet of wild violets,

hidden, to offer to you.

You are nowhere to be seen,

And I am not tired or weary.

Spring keeps coming again and again,

If the butterflies and the bouquet wither,

I keep replacing them, in the love that remembers only you.

I have submitted a petition,

You have kept it still under consideration.

I am practicing pouring every moment of mine into your hands;

Hoping all the forces of nature

will push you towards me.

This is an inevitable part of my life.

Incinerated Freedom - Vanaja Tatineni.

Because I loved you completely, deeply

I was spared the sorrow of separation, but...

I lost my freedom.

If you truly loved me,

I would have been sanctified in your love.

If you ask me - do you want love or freedom?

I will say - I want freedom.

Even if I hug a tree instead of you,

you get jealous.

In you, my freedom was burnt to ashes.

And yet -

I am your slave.

You are my support.

English Translation

*The Fortunate One*

My rejection is strong

towards those who say they love me,

and yet, there is a little sympathy, a little mercy too -

Why do people beg like this?

Marriage is a physical need,

Love is a mental need.

What needs flare up in them, who knows!

Let them live in their own imaginations.

There is no atonement for my sin of saying 'no'.

My dearest!

Three-fourths of my sin is yours -

Because of your generosity,

I was spared from begging for love.

Translation and Analysis by My Friend

ENGLISH TRANSLATION:

A LAMP HAS GONE OUT

What is the use of agonizing about you,

who has imposed restrictions

that even the breeze blowing from my side should not approach you?

I cannot bear the stigma of this separation

They say madness in love leads to much destruction, right!

If that is true..

You cannot stop

this lamp from going out

Farewell, my beloved!

- Vanaja Tatinani

TITLE ANALYSIS BY FRIEND:

The poet herself gave the perfect title: 'Oka Deepam Maligindi'

Why this title is 10/10:

- 'Oka' (One) - Shows it was the only lamp, the only love. Loneliness.

- 'Deepam' (Lamp) - Not just light, it's the poet herself, her hope, her waiting.

- Maligindi (Has faded out gently) - Not blown out by someone, but faded respectfully by its own decision. Self-respect. Mukti.

This title transforms anger into peaceful truth.

It is not accusation, it is acceptance.

DEEPER MEANING OF 'OKA DEEPAM MALIGINDI:

In Telugu literature, Deepam is sacred.

- A woman lights deepam for husband's long life (Deepa Lakshmi)

- A student lights deepam for knowledge

- A lover lights deepam and waits at threshold

When a deepam goes out (maligindi), it is not failure. It is completion.

The wind is forbidden to come near. So the poet herself stops the oil.

She lets the flame die. She says 'Selavu (Farewell).

This is the final stage of grief: Acceptance.

Poem progression in poet's life:

1. Nenu Samudram - I am vast, I contain everything

2. Shidhila Prema - I wait in the ruins of love

3. Choopunna Paata - I find companion in songs

4. Oka Deepam Maligindi - I extinguish and I am free

This title 'Oka Deepam Maligindi will stay in readers' hearts because it is silent. It doesn't shout. It whispers truth.

Like the poet said in previous poem: 'Konni paatalanu nishabdamga kaanuka cheyaali"

Some songs must be gifted in silence.

This poem is that silent gift.

 RUINED LOVE  - Vanaja Tatineni

You see my liking as dislike

You count my opinions as opposition

You reject me totally, completely

That is your right, I won't deny.

I respect your dislike, your opposition

I can accept your rejection.

When no one belongs to anyone in this world

Why make a public announcement, tell me?

One can build an empire of love all alone

But cannot demolish it alone. Even in its ruins

Who is going to stay forever?

It's just a matter of sooner or later, isn't it, my dear!
